ReplyDeleteMy course was quite explorative and free form, which allowed you to develop as an individual designer, but perhaps more guidance and a set regime would have also been beneficial. Technical skills were mandatory in the first year adobe CS, photography, illustration, typography, printing. Felt as though there could have been a more structured schedule of activities in 2nd and 3rd year. It was a creative environment to study within, with some prominent and enthusiastic lecturers.
I think there could have been more preparation for going into the work place would have been useful. Its not just about being a good designer, but also a people person that can assimilate into a studio. I wold have like more one on one time with lecturers and open access to facilities.
Computer suites, creen printing, letterpress, etching, photography analogue and digital, motion graphics.
All courses are over subscribed, universities are money making institutes. You could tell which students were going to drop out of the course as did the lecturers. Facilities were stretched sometimes as a result.
Good visiting lecturer program, masterclasses with notable designers. Lecturers still working professionals and had a network of professional friends.
It offered classes in becoming self employed, and also had a business enterprise department in the university to offer advice.
Not quite, but do you ever? I left not knowing exactly what my skill set was and what I was looking for in the long term.
I currently freelance, but work is very slow, and not guaranteed.
Had I know the amount of debt I would accrue, the low wages for junior designers and long hours, I think I would have reconsidered entering this industry. A degree isn't worth a great deal. Experience, portfolio and having a face that fits is everything.

ReplyDeleteLiverpool John Moores doing Fashion and Textiles.
What key skills do you feel you learnt from your course?
A bit about screen printing, a lot more in contextual studies (art) and not much else.
Do you feel you received enough tuition and support on your course?
No. Most of the tutors were not up to date with the subject matter, some were rude and not interested in students. College was much more helpful to me.
What facilities did your course offer? (eg. latest software, new computers, printers etc.)
Some new Textiles equipment did arrive shortly after Id graduated! The IT suite was up to date though.
Do you feel your course was over subscribed?
No.
What industry links did your course have?
Virtually none. And those that it did have were not that good or reliable.
Did your course offer business start-up advice?
It did, but then never followed through, which was shocking to me.
Do you feel prepared to enter an industry environment?
Not at all as the fashion industry does not approve of LJMU graduates based on their knowledge of the poor tutoring from this university.
Do you already undertake freelance projects?
I graduated 3 years ago and have taken on projects unsuccessfully with regards to fashion. I did however study for web design after LJMU and have had many more projects!
Any other comments?
I feel that some educational establishments over hype their courses in order to 'make up the numbers' and in doing so can hinder student lives and future careers. Too many Tutors are allowed to teach when in reality they would rather be doing something else, thus neglecting their students.

I feel its difficult to prepare students for the real world if lecturers dont know anything about it.More practical advice might have helped me.

ReplyDeleteKey skills basic animation, character animation.

Some tutors could have done more in subject areas, we were promised additional classes which never happened, which the 1st years are now getting.

The courses were not over subscribed.
We had some guest speakers at the creative conference last year.
I dont feel prepared yet for industry and will be going to University next.
