Questions for studio owners...

What skill sets would you expect from graduates looking for employment?

Do you feel graduates are well prepared for industry by their courses?

Do you offer placement opportunities through links with colleges/universities?

What advice would you give under graduates wanting to embark on a career in design?

Any other comments?

  1. I would expect basic skill sets on all CS programs.

I dont believe design students get enough from their work placements they need more exposure to industry and the real world.

We offer short placements depending on project needs, from a month to 3 months.

Be different. The amount of portfolios that look alike is scary, we like to see individuality.

Students must lern to network more and meet prospective employers, show willing.

  2. 1. The graduates must show skills on the softwares he intend to use.

They should also present a portfolio with at least one or two creative ideas. It is in the school enviroment where they will find more freedom to experiment.

    2. I feel some graduates are, even if they don't realize that.

    3. Not yet, but looking forwad to do so.

    4. They should practice all the time and do volunteer work, in order to acquire experience and networking.

  3. Software skills, ideas in skecthbooks, original thoughts not just polished portfolios.

Not particularly, more emphasis on business is needed on their courses.

Short unpaid placements, a fortnight in a real studio helps them understand the process.

Work harder and show some initiative, come up with original ideas and explore design routes more before you get in a commercial environment.

What skill sets would you expect from graduates looking for employment?

broad range of software and digital media skills, research and analysis skills, good thinking skills and overall enthusiasm, initiative and ingenuity can go a long way.

nothing can really prepare you for the real thing but as much work experience as you can get doing the real thing will always give you an advantage. not just the work involved but an understanding of the running of the company can be hugely beneficial.

yes, they have proved to be extremely beneficial.

use your mind, your pens and visual inspiration from all around you. creativity and good design comes from within, not from the tools you use to execute the brief.

if you want it bad enough, you can have it.

  6. What skill sets would you expect from graduates looking for employment?

Essential CS skill sets, and a good working knowledge of other computer programs.

Do you feel graduates are well prepared for industry by their courses?

I feel they may have some knowledge of influence and historical style, theory etc but not enough practical experience.

Do you offer placement opportunities through links with colleges/universities?

We offer 2-3 week unpaid placements although students are asked to get involved and input their ideas not just sit around reading.

What advice would you give under graduates wanting to embark on a career in design?

Show your inspiration in your sketch books, too many portfolios look the same, you need to stand out a little from your peers.

  7. Definitely all adobe programs, web and flash a bonus. Designers need to be multi skilled.

I think most design graduates need to understand they wont get their dream job straight away, work from the bottom. Not something uni can teach you.

short placements, unpaid. Useful for students though.

Explore more and use as much mixed discipline as poss. Get out there and see whats happening, exhibitions, galleries and every day obsevations. We dont just want Mac Monkeys!

    Be yourself and show individuality.
